Peter Atherton has died in Vancouver at the age of 91.

Peter was the patriarch of the Atherton clan and a key link between the Atherton, Kelly and O'Toole families.

Peter was the son of Theodore Clement Atherton (Great-uncle Ted to us) and grew up in Vancouver in St. Joseph's parish alongside the Kellys who had recently immigrated from North Dakota.

In the mid-30's, the Kellys welcomed a young O'Toole cousin to stay with them while he looked for work. That was Pat O'Toole - and Pat and Peter became best friends, eventually serving as each other's best men at their weddings.

Peter became a great friend and marvelous resource to me as I studied our family histories. He was a great story-teller with a wicked sense of humour!

He leaves behind a wonderful family with several children, many grand children and a host of great-grandchildren. We met two of his sons at the reunion Greg with Debbie and Kevin with Rosalie. It was so great to connect with this arm of the family at that time.

Greg said in his message late last night, "I am saddened to inform you that dad passed away this afternoon. He was hospitalized in early October due to pneumonia and followed a slow but steady downhill course. Three generations were with him in the room at the time of his peaceful passing. His was truly a life well lived and respected."

His family will miss him greatly but Peter was a man of great faith and I imagine that as the time grew closer, he was thinking how happy he'd be to see his wife Helen again along with his best friend Pat. I hope that's what it was like for him.
