Gawain Atherton of Ashton
Gawain Atherton of Ashton together with his only surviving brother Humphrey is a son of Thomas Atherton of Ashton in Makerfield. It is estimated that Gawain was born around the year 1575 and was named after his grandfather.

Humphrey Atherton 1607-1661 History
Humphrey Atherton was born in 1607 into a family of minor Lancashire gentlemen. He was the son of Edmund Atherton of Winstanley who in turn was a son of Humphrey Atherton of Billinge. In later life Humphrey left Lancashire to settle in the New World. He was just one of a number South West Lancashire Calvinist Puritans who, influenced by the Reverend Richard Mather sought to make a new life in the American Colonies.

The original purpose behind this endeavour was to build up a family tree of the "Atherton's of Bold" with the intention of being able to trace direct ancestry back through a William Atherton Yeoman from Bold who was born around the year 1700 and was buried in Bold on 28 Feb 1776.
