Served 23 years in the Marines. Fought with Marine Air Group 61 near the Solomons. VMB 423

Was a Captain until he was promoted to the rank of Major in Marine intelligence.

Tracy Died In His Office (worked With Water Resources And State Lands Of California As Chief Cartographer Engineer In Charge Of All Mapping Of California State Lands. He Also Worked In Conjunction With US Geological Surveys 1951-1962) Of A Stroke.

B.S.C.E. California Institute of Technology

Grandfather Atherton often drove out to the farms to check up on the work being done and see, for himself, how things were going. Many of the farms around the Plains were cultivate and tended farm hands from Kentucky - the others living in town.
On some of these trips, Albert Atherton would came by our home and ask the boys if they would like to drive out with him. Of course they always wanted to go - never down a chance like that to help `drive` out to the farm.
We had a very large yard and the boys had a large dog and a play wagon with shafts. They would hitch up the dog to the wagon and Tracy would say to Wilbur - making his voice sound deep and scruff, `Come on, Bill let`s go out to the farm!` and both would pile into the wagon with Wilbur saying, `Alright Sam, I`ll go.` The they drove the dog to the back of the lot, go out and looked around then started to ride back. The dog seemed to enjoy the stunt as much as the boys.
The name `Bill` stuck to Wilbur and to the present day he is known everywhere as `Bill Atherton`. His father had a brother, William, who was called Bill and that may have had its influence, too.

46 "My earliest memories of my dad (Alfred Thomas Atherton) are of him working at Myers in the city. He left by train before we got up of a morning; quite often we would be in bed when he got home...Saturday night, he and Mum would go dancing. He loved to dress well and would give me sixpence to clean his shoes...Dad was a good cook. At home on Sunday he would always cook a roast - the best feed of the week...He loved animals; we always had a dog...He bred canaries and I had a parrot...He was determined to keep his family together but could not do this on his own and go to work too. He must have loved us very much. He worked with Grandpa (Alfred Joseph Atherton) on the windmills and also swept chimneys...Right up until the day Dad died he was still trying to get his family back together again. He was looking forward to Christmas and had gifts for all his children when he died." ('Nothing to Cry About, Joan Atherton Hooper, pages 3-5). ATHERTON, Alfred Thomas (I16921)
