He first settled in New York state and later went to Wisconsin, and then to Dunlap, Iowa, where he engaged in farming and homesteaded a farm on the prairies of that state. There, 49 years ago he married Miss Jennie Vinning [sic], who with their three sons and three daughters, survive him.
Nearly 33 years ago they came to Ontario and purchased a ranch near the city, which Mr. Atherton operated for years. Several years ago Mr. Atherton retired from farm operations, but continued to own several properties in the country, as well as in town.
One of Mr. Atherton`s greatest interests was in gardening, and a observation of weather conditions. Until shortly before his last illness he kept a daily record of the temperature and other features of the weather.`
