- In the 1900 U. S. Census, Charles was listed in the household of his father James, and his mother, Mary Laduska Vining,and as born Oct 1885, age, 14, born in Iowa and attending school for 9 months. Also listed were his siblings: Hattie E., born Jan 1881, age 19; Sarah E., born Feb 1887, age 13; Raymond B., born Sept 1890, age 9; James W., born Nov 1891, age 8; Ida M., born Sept 1893, age 6; and Verna E. born Jan 1897, age 3. All children were single, born in Iowa, and all except for Verna `At school` for nine months.

In the 1920 U. S. Census, taken on January 2nd, Charles was listed as owning a mortgaged home in Rockford Township, his age as 33, married to Ida May [sic - Mae?] whose age was listed as 30 and a son named Harland Charles, age listed as 3 and 6/12 years. All the family`s birthplaces were listed as Iowa with Charles` father born in Wales with English as the mother tongue and his mother`s as Iowa. Ida`s parents` birthplaces were both shown as Canada with English as the mother tongue. Charles` occupation was `Farmer` on a farm working for his own account.

`Local Man Dies After A Paralytic Stroke
Charles H. Atherton, 63, life-long resident of Harrison county, died at his home at 508 East Elm about 2 a.m., Tuesday.
Mr. Atherton sufered a paralytic stroke last week.
He was born at Woodbine, October 31, 1883 and was a resident of the Missouri Valley vicinity for 40 years.
Mr. Atherton was engaged in farming southwest of Missouri Valley for many years. He moved to Missouri Valley about 10 years ago and had resided here since. For some time he was employed as sexton at Rose Hill cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Mae, Missouri Valley; son, Harlan, Missouri Valley; sisters Mrs. Sarah Tucker of Lincoln, Neb., Miss Hatttie Atherton of Denver, Colo., and Verna of Onaha; and a brother, James Atherton.`
