- In the 1870 U. S. Census, Mary, age 12, was listed with her parents Albert Bela, age 37, and Harriet Finch, age 32, and three other children, Myron, age 11, Albert, age 8, and Robert, age 1 (which seems to be in error. No mention was made of Laura Virginia who should have been age 4). The children were born in Iowa, except for Albert who is listed as born in New York.

Comments by Kenneth D. Austin:
When Grandma and Aunt Hattie lived in Mo Valley, they had two lots, a large garden, rasberries and strawberries. On back end of lot was a building with a carriage house, cob and coal house and chicken house for some hens so they always had eggs for thier own use and some to sell. The house is gone now and there are two houses there now. Grandma had a loom. She made rag rugs for family and sold some, gave a lot away. I can still see her throwing the shuttle back and forth. Always had a boarder or two. Harold Martin worked at the post office. When he decided to go to school to be a ostopath, they [was this Grandma and Aunt Hattie?] sold out and went to Marysville, Mo. to be with him. They had canaries in Mo Valley, Dickie and Minnie. Raised some little ones for sale. Evey summer they would come to our place for a week or two, one at a time, then go over to Uncle Raymond and Aunt Fanny for a week or two before going back home on the train. We always went there for Christmas.
