Census, James B., birthdate Dec 1883, age 16, was listed with his parents, Charles, age 55, his mother, Laura V., age 36, his two brothers; Roger W., birthdate Jul 1885, age 14, and Edward R., birthdate Feb 1890, age 10, and two sisters; Laura E., birthdate Nov 1891, age 8, and Ivy F., birthdate Apr 1884, age 6. They are reported as living in Boyer Township. James` bithplace is Iowa and his occupation is listed as `Farm laborer` and he attended school for 4 months.

In the 1920 U. S. Census, James is listed as J. Bela [Bela was the name used by family and friends], age 35, and as living in owned mortgaged property on Morton Street in Ontario, Oregon with an occupation as `Clerk` in a `grocery store` and under column 28 listed as `s` (for salary). His wife is listed as `Callie` [again the name used by family and friends], age 30, Place of birth `Kansas,` father`s place of birth `Tennessee` and mother`s place of birth `Illinois.` The children are listed as `Arthur C.` [sic], age 9, and `C. Earl,` age 7.

`J. B. Atherton Services Held

James Bela Atherton, 66, a retired grocer and a long-time resident of Ontario died at his home here June 14. He had lived here since 1902 and through the years had taken an active part in community affairs.
Services were held Saturday morning at Beechler Funeral home with Rev. C. D. Honeyford officiating. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Atherton was a member of the Ontario school board for several terms, serving for a time as chairman. He was a member of Ontario`s volunteer fire department for more than 20 years, and for many years he was the city fire chief. He was a deacon in the First Baptist church.
He was a grocer in Ontario throughout most of his life, although he farmed for a time and at one time operated a service station.
Mr. Atherton was born in Dunlap, Iowa, on Dec. 31, 1884 [sic - 1883]. He was married to Minnie Carolyn Ingle at Ontario on Feb. 19, 1908.
He is survived by his widow, and by two sons, Arthur of Salem and Earl of American Falls, Idaho; by two brothers; Roger of Ontario and Edward of Pendleton, and by three sisters; Mrs. Fern Garren, Sunnyside, Washington; Mrs. Mary Yarnell of Portland, and Mrs. Laura Allison of Salem; and by three grandchildren.`
