Notes |
- Bill Atherton's son John had a wife Betsy Moorhouse who told me about her father in law William (Bill) Atherton. He had lived on Bury street Mossley, Lancashire with his wife Isabella. He worked as an agent for his brother Giles Atherton who had a company called Turner, Atherton and co, Virginia mills, Stockport. they made hatting machinery and Bill was like a rep who went around the world selling them. Betsy told me though that he told her that he flatly refused to go to Russia, (thihis was at the time of the revolution i think). he came back from one of his travels with a Persian type rug. and so, one day when Isabella had hung it over some factory railings near their house on bury street to hit it with a brush, she left i it to air and came back later to discover that it had gone. someone told her that Maria Hadfield had took it. so when he came back from work he went round to Maria's house and knocked on her door. and told her that he wasn't going to make a fuss or argue with her but he knew she had the rug and he would give her ten minutes and if the rug wasn't back on the railings he would call the police. he went back to his house and waited and ten minutes later checked the railings and there it was, much later bill Atherton's grandson jack married Maria Hadfield's granddaughter Mildred.
Bill Atherton also at one point had a pub, Betsy told me, called the mucky duck or some such in Ashton.
? the pub that William (bill) Atherton was landlord of was actually the Walkmill Tavern 41 Margaret Street, Ashton - u - Lyne.
He is listed as landlord in 1903 - 1905 in Rob Magee's book "A directory of Ashton Pubs and their licensees"
Also, Rob Magee writes that "the beerhouse was nicknamed 'the mucky hut' because it was used by rag tatters - apparently the last landlord was a rag tatter (in 1939).
So, when Betsey Atherton nee Moorhouse (Bill Atherton's daughter-in-law) told me about the pub years later (in 1986) she was remembering its name since the 30's which is why she could remember it as being the 'mucky something like duck',
information relates to William Atherton born Sep 1862, son of James Atherton of Altrincham 1828- 1898 and
Elizabeth Jane McKinsey 1830-1864.
