Mary Elizabeth Thomas Atherton, 92, of Adams died in the early morning hours of Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Good Samaritan Home in Liberal, KS.
She was born Sept. 21, 1909 to Harry Walker Thomas and Lenora Angeline English in Eastland, Texas. Lizabeth's mother died when she was three or four years of age and she lived with an aunt and uncle until her father remarried, then went to live with her family; father, stepmother, sister and brothers. The family moved to Slpringdale, Ark. where they purchased a farm and it was there she grew to young womanhood.
She met and married Marvin Clifton King on Jan. 29, 1928. He preceded her in death on June 25, 1962. Lizabeth managed a shoe store in Bonhem, Texas for many years. She was a talented salesperson.
She was introduced to Rev. E.H. Atherton in early 1971 by her sister and husband, Helen and Badge Wadley. Lizabeth and Rev. Atherton were married on May 22, 1971. They made their home in Adams where they lived until the fall of 1996.
Mary Elizabeth was an avid reader, extremely talented seamstress and loved to fish with E.H. They bought a trailer and enjoyed going on fishing trips for several years. On Dec. 4,1982, Rev. Atherton went home to be with the Lord he had served throughout his lifetime. E.H.'s last request was that his children look after Lizabeth and see she was always taken good care of until she departed this life.
In the fall of 1996, it became necessary for Lizabeth to leave her home in Adams and to the Good Samaritan Home in Liberal, KS.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and stepson, Medford Atherton.
