Clifford Lawrence Atherton, 96, of 7238 Gleason Hill Road, died Monday (April 6, 2009)?at Jones Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Born April 22, 1912, in Belfast, he was the son of George W. and Vanche Black Atherton. He married the former Bernice Covert and later he married the former Arlene Ehman, both of whom predeceased him.
Cliff resided all of his life in the Belfast area and for many years owned and operated the family dairy farm on?Gleason Hill. In 1948, he was employed at the town of Belfast, where he was heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1975.
He loved to hunt and fish and especially being with his friends.
He was a member of the Belfast First Baptist Church, a social member of the Robert W. Howden Belfast American Legion Post No. 1504, a social member of the Norton Chambers Hinsdale American Legion Post No. 1434, member and past president of the Grumpy Old Men Club in Belfast and a member and past president of the Genesee Valley Conservation Club.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth L. (Patricia)?Atherton of Belfast; a stepson, Dennis W. (Barbara)?Meyers of Lisbon, Maine; seven granddaughters and several great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Potter of Wellsville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Phillip L. Atherton.
Funeral and committal services took place at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast, NY., with the Rev. James Balson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Rushford, officiating.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Belfast, NY.
