Floyd M. Atherton, Jr., 62, of Independence, Kansas passed away at his home on Sunday, January 15, 2006.
Floyd was born August 03, 1943 in Parsons, Kansas to Floyd M. and Anna Jaunita (Thompson) Atherton. He was raised and educated in Independence, Kansas graduating from Independence High School in 1961.
He entered the U.S. Air Force on 29th of May, 1961 and was discharged on 19th of November, 1964. He reenlisted in the U.S. Navy on the 14th of December 1967 as an Airman Apprentice. He served on numerous Ships, Squadrons and Stations during 21 years of service, retiring in 1985 in Pennsecola, Florida as an AT-1 Chief Petty Officer. He served in Viet Nam, Beirut, Libya, Phillipines, and Australia. Floyd received numerous awards and accommodations for serving his country. Following his Military retirement, he worked at the Naval Aviation Depot at Pennsecola until 1991, when he returned to Independence, Kansas. He worked at Teledyne, Hackney, Emerson Electric, Dillons Food, Cessna, Wal-Mart, and Colbalt Boats.
Floyd is survived by his sister, Jo Ann Beck of Kingsville, Missouri; one niece, Denise Amerine of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and two nephews, Jeff Amerine of Blue Springs, Missouri and Brenton Beck of Kingsville, Missouri; and great niece, Savannah Amerine of Pleasant Hill, Missouri and great nephew, David Wilcher of Independence, Missouri; and his best friend, Sierra.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Anna Jaunita Atherton and another best friend, Smokie.
Visitation hours for Floyd will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2006 at the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Chapel.
Funeral services for Floyd M. Atherton, Jr. will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the Penwell-Gabel Webb Rodrick Chapel of Independence with Pastor Steve Butler of the Community Christian Church officiating.
Burial will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence, Kansas.
Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Army, Fort Riley.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the American Heart Association. Memorials may be left with the funeral home.
