From Find a Grave:
Cornelius Atherton
Birth: Feb., 6, 1815
Death: Oct., 1900
Rochester Post and Record, October 29, C. Atherton, the aged resident of this city who has been lingering between life and death for many months, passed away at his home on Eighth street today at 12:30 o'clock. Old age was the cause of death and had confined him to his bed for four months previous to his demise. Cornelius Atherton was born in Bullin, Conn., on the 6th day of February, 1815. He has been a respected citizen of Minnesota for forty-five years and has lived in Rochester twenty-four years. In his early life he owned and operated several woolen manufactories at different times and met with great success in this line. He build the first grist mill in Dodge county and lived there for some time. He was well known at Wasioja, where he first settled in this state. On coming to ROchester he engaged in the mercantile business for a while, but had done nothing for the last twelve years on account of failing health. In 1856 he married Emma L. Sawyer who is now left to mourn the loss of a companion who shared her sorrows and joys for so long a time. Three children survive him whose names are I.E. Atherton, of Tacoma, Wash: Mrs. H.F. Gates, of St. Paul, and E.C. Atherton, of Montana. Mr. Atherton led a devout Christian life, having joined the Methodist church when nineteen years of age and adhered to its teachings ever since. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge and his funeral will be conducted under the auspices of that body at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The deceased was one of the most widely known citizens of Southern Minnesota, and his friends in various parts of the state will hear of his death with regret. Many friends in this city sympathize deeply with the bereaved wife. (As indicated by the above, Mr. Atherton was one of the best known of the early settlers of Dodge county, his occupation as a miller, merchant, postmaster, town clerk, etc., bringing him in touch with the majority of the residents of those days. His grist mill, however, was not the first in the county, but the first outside of Mantorville. His death breaks another of the links that binds the present to a past that ever as it recedes grows more dear to its rapidly decreasing survivors. Very appropriately, Mr. Atherton's remains were brought for burial to the old home at Wasioja, in the little Wildwood cemetery that he helped to set apart when the banks of the Zumbro were a wilderness. There, with others of the pioneers, associates in their ambitions and activities, dreams and disappointments "life's troubled fever over" he rest well.)

CORNELIUS ATHERTON
On another page will be found an obituary, in part copied from a Rochester paper, of one of Wasioja's pioneers, named above.
Thus in this issue the Express chronicles the passing of three members of the Old Settlers' association. The sympathy of every surviving member will go out to those who mourn, and the memories of the departed will be preserved alike in the communities they helped to create and in the archives of the association.
