John Townsend Atherton and Francis Henry Atherton are said to have first gone out to Australia in 1854, when Francis was 14 years old (possibly with the help of their older sister Charlotte). It was always said that they went out to look for golld. They first went up to [discover] the Atherton Tablelands then moved back down to Gympie. John appears to be more interested in farming while Francis was the one who went for gold mining. Francis made his fortune in gold mining. then went down to Sidney and blew it on the horses at Sidney Race Course. When the money was gone he went back to the gold fields and did it all over again. He did this at least three time.
