Miss Eleanor Stone was born in New York on December 10, 1844. She came West with her father, William Stone, who was one of the pioneers of DeKalb County. In Lee County, Illinois on December 10, 1865, she married Mr. William M. Atherton. After marriage they located on a 40 acre tract in Dekalb County where Mr. Atherton engaged in farming. In 1869 they moved to California where Mr. Atherton engaged in raising grain. In 1872, they returned to DeKalb County and purchased 130 acres of the Atherton family place. Mr. and Mrs. Atherton raised five children: Adaline L. (Benjamin Valentine), Ralph L. (Bertha Hoag), Benjamin F. (Olive Prentice), Wilbur Angus (Mary Kirby) and Jonathan W. (Mary Stern). Mrs. Atherton died on June 1, 1883 and was buried in the South Paw Paw Cemetery.
