Stanley Edward Atherton 19 and his elder brother William Joseph Atherton 24 drowned in a boating accident in the Thames near Kingston on 21 Mar 1918. Stanley, a Driver in the RASC (T/308901) 359th Coy was on leave from his unit in Dublin.
William Joseph Atherton, a Second Officer in the Mercantile Fleet was also on leave (having already been torpedoed twice).
It is believed from the Coroners report that Stanley had fallen in, and, being a non swimmer, his brother William had attempted to save him without success.
