My Grandmother used to say her name was meant to be Gwenllian but the registrar couldn't spell it, so they named her Winifred instead. She said her grandfather Atherton always called her Gwen.
I always wondered if they decided on Winifred because of St Winifred's Well in Holywell Fflintshire, where her grandfather was from. She used to say her grandfather was a 'northerner' ... meaning north Wales.
