Emma Lord our Greatgrand mother was never married to Thomas Frances Atherton they lived together for 5-6years until Thomas died aged 27 years on March 20th 1876 from Phthisis TB. When Thomas died Emma reverted to her proper name Emma Clare previously Hampson formerly Lord. In 1876 Emma had 3 children, Emma Louisa Hampson from her 1st marriage to Richard Thomas Hampson 6th June 1865 he drowned in the Rochdale Canal Dec 9th 1866 aged 22. 2nd marriage to William Clare on Sept 2nd 1867, their son William was born on 25th Sept 1869 (our paternal line). 3rd child Zillah Kezia Atherton born Dec 13th 1973 Thomas Atherton`s daughter. Emma to appear respectable changed her first two children`s surnames to Atherton the name we are called to this day It took us 4 years to sort this tangled web out, hope it helps you. N.Atherton should be Clare.
