      He was the son of Frank and Sara Atherton and husband of Lena Atherton, of 3 Stone Cottages, Saltney Ferry. During the First World war he served with the Lancashire Fusiliers in India, the Dardanelles and France. He was then employed in the engineering department of L.M.S. at Ellesmere Port and Chester. He retired due to ill health in June 1939. He rejoined the South Lancashire Regiment, 6th Battalion but was taken ill two days later and was moved to Clatterbridge. He died at the Clatterbridge Hospital, Bebington, Wirral aged 45 yrs. He was buried on the 9th July 1940.
